It has always felt slightly grubby in the Methuen Arms but good if you need a cheap venue for a birthday party. The drinks werenâ¬"t always varied and the interior was rather dull and oppressive. I canâ¬"t rate the atmosphere either and it felt more like a pub for blokes who wanted to watch a bit of football and less of a sociable and welcoming bar. Though it has been closed now, I do hope the new owners give it a warmer feel and take away that negative vibe. The Ostlers House is an outstanding 5-star listed 2-bedroom cottage situated in the South Cotswold village of Pickwick near Bath and offers spacious, light and airy accommodation for visitors to stay, incorporating the former stables, hayloft and the original Ostlerâ¬"s cottage.

This beautiful self-catering property sleeps four people in two generously proportioned bedrooms. The impressive master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling and a king-size four-poster bed. The second bedroom has good quality full size twin beds and a cot can be provided if required.

The comfortable sitting room has under-floor central heating and looks out onto the courtyard. An LCD TV screen, satellite receiver and DVD/CD player are provided for guest use. There is free Wi-Fi wireless broadband with a PC provided or you can connect your own laptop.

The spacious farmhouse kitchen features a full range of modern appliances as well as a woodburner and original flagstone flooring.

Outside there is secluded courtyard and private, gated parking area.

Dating from 1700, the property has been sympathetically restored by The Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust using traditional methods. The cottage retains a wealth of original features and is situated on the A4 next to the famous Hare and Hounds, an old coaching inn where Charles Dickens is reputed to have stayed.

Personally run by owners Andy & Stella, The Ostlers House is available for short stays or complete weeks. Themed breaks linking with local events such as the Bath Christmas Market are offered from time to time.
